Dr Liam Mooney
Clinical Psychologist
Specialising in Learning Disabilities, Complex Care and
Behaviours Perceived as Challenging
Psychological support for adults with learning disabilities, complex needs and behaviours perceived as challenging
I support individuals, families and care teams to understand behaviour, reduce distress and improve quality of life through evidence-based psychological approaches.
I am a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working in NHS Learning Disability Services across Scotland, including in community, inpatient settings and Behaviour Support/Crisis Intervention teams. Alongside my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I hold a Professional Diploma in Positive Behavioural Support (PBS). My work integrates Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), PBS and systemic approaches. I have experience of training health and social care professionals across a range of settings and I have regularly guest lectured on the local clinical doctorate programme on topics related to learning disabilities and PBS. I also have additional formal training in supervision, forensic risk assessment tools, autism and ADHD diagnostic schedules.
How I Can Help
I can support adults, their families, and care teams to provide tailored support, including:
-
One off or ongoing consultation and advice to care providers on behavioural, mental health and relational difficulties
-
Support with life transitions, such as moving home, changes in care provision, significant adjustments, helping to ensure the best possible psychological outcomes
-
Psychological assessment and intervention for mental health difficulties, emotional wellbeing and behaviours that challenge, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), and systemic approaches
-
Carer support, including psychological therapy to sustain wellbeing and caregiving roles
-
Training for staff teams on topics such as learning disability, autism, positive behaviour support, trauma-informed care, and more
-
Clinical supervision for psychologists, therapists, and behavioural specialists
-
Learning disability diagnostic assessments to guide support planning and diagnostic decisions
I offer direct psychological support as well as indirect consultation, formulation, training and supervision delivered online throughout Scotland and in person across Grampian and Tayside areas. I can also travel further afield by arrangement.

A Little About Me
During my first psychology degree, I worked as a support worker for people with learning disabilities and complex physical health needs, and as a carer advocacy worker at a Carers Centre. These experiences showed me the challenges people can face accessing specialist support and advice when needed, and the psychological impact of caregiving. I felt privileged to be trusted with people's stories, and it sparked my curiosity about how people can stay well when circumstances can’t easily be changed, but the way we approach them can. These early experiences inspired me to pursue Clinical Psychology and continue to shape my passion for working alongside people with learning disabilities and those who support them.
Outside of psychology, I have a young family and a lively cocker spaniel. I love all types of comedy and enjoy making people laugh with varying success! I enjoy spending time by the sea, exploring Scotland’s beautiful beaches.
Fees
My fee is £140 per hour for both in-person or video consultations.
